PR Week asks if Three is a Crowd Media Training

The following is a time-coded transcript of the show:

PR week magazine asked the question is through the crowd
0:07
speaking the show about effective speaking in public to the media at work
0:19
and in life speaking with TJ Walker this is a question that's been debated for
0:30
years decades in the public relations world the question of course relates to
0:35
if you've got a reporter interviewing a CEO and executive about a story should
0:41
there be a third-person the PR person in the room now i have taken a position
0:47
over the years very firmly in favor of no it doesn't give you more control it
0:53
doesn't help with anything because if the executive in question of the
0:58
politician says something stupid
1:02
the reporter can still use it you can't have the PR person they're reeling it
1:07
back in it doesn't work like that famously earlier this year can start his
1:12
PR handler in the room she tried to stop the interview that made a much bigger
1:16
mistake it made can start look like an absolute fool even those who love 10 *
1:21
why does this happen i believe in
1:26
look folks many PR people are my friends they're my clients they're wonderful but
1:31
PR people like anyone else we do self-serving things sometimes we want to
1:36
make yourself seem more important we want to ourselves to see more
1:41
indispensable so we want to be in the room when the interview happens and
1:45
unfortunately it's counter-productive you can make the reporter feel on edge
1:50
you can make the executive being interviewed feel on edge and again hold
1:55
it feels like there's a life preserver there but it's actually not the time for
1:59
a PR person to help an executive is before the interview starts before the
2:05
reporter comes in the room or before the phone call starts and what most people
2:13
PR what most people don't do that they should do is actually rehearse the
2:17
interview with the client make sure
2:19
have not only message . but soundbites prepared if you do that you will be the
2:25
third person in room in spirit at all times
